TRU Rare Earth Element Team- Less Heymann Alex Knox Cliff Hanson Damao Rare Earth Bayan Obo, Baotou, China

has one of the strongest rare earths capability in the western world. The team members each have several years experience with exiting REE producers in China and the west as geologists, mineral and REE process engineers or in senior management. Team members have assessed rare earth resources, designed and engineered rare earth mines / mining, mineral processing and rare earth REE final product plants. Our scope of work includes rare earth elements geology, rare earth mine & plant engineering, feasibility studies, rare earth extraction, REE process development, resource / process evaluation, testing and company due diligence.  In addition, we have worked in the development on new high tech applications for rare earth elements REE's and Heavy Rare Earth Oxide HREO. TRU is very well connected in China and uses experts and laboratory capabilities that are more available in China than in the west. (China controls more than 90% of global production of rare earth elements and REE heavy metals). For example, in 2012 TRU is undertaking laboratory experimentation and process pilot testing of ore samples as part of a detailed feasibility study for the development of a major north american based REE resource.

In another assignment, the TRU team identified and assessed promising heavy rare earth metals development projects of over seventy under development in the west and ranked them according to clients criteria. In particular TRU assessed the west's capability to supply REE needed for high tech electric vehicles and batteries. We evaluated processing amenability and compared costs of various producers compared to China. We determined their competitiveness with REE producers in China.  This was focused on heavy rare earth elements HREE (examples, dysprosium Dy, Europium Eu, Terbium Tb, Yttrium, Y) used in permanent magnets for electric motors. rare earth engineering

The TRU Rare Earth Element Team has also worked in the applications for REE's. TRU assisted a company to introduce scandium metal metal in the west. Rare Earth OxidesScandium had long been used in high tech aerospace in the former Soviet Union. TRU president was VP Operations with a manufacturer of erbium doped optical fiber and photonic optical amplifiers (edfa) for telecommunications networks. We also work extensively in related sectors such as lithium.    Bayan Obo Frontier Rare Earths  Zandkopsdrift South Africa TSE IPO rare earth element mineral price investment

REE DEFINITION: The definition of rare earths elements usually encompasses the elements of the periodic table from Atomic Number 57 to 71 (the Lanthanide series) and may alternately include or exclude one or more of several elements, namely Scandium (Sc), Yttrium (Y), Lanthanum (La) or Lutetium (Lu). Likewise heavy rare earth elements (HREE) may also include certain elements based on their common mineral occurrence or chemical properties. TRU has adopted the definition of REE to include all elements in the Lanthanide series (Atomic Number 57 to 71) as well as Yttrium (Atomic Number 39). Elements belonging to the HREE subcategory include some of the Lanthanide elements from Atomic 62 to 71 as well as Yttrium. HREE + Y = Samarium • Europium • Gadolinium • Terbium • Dysprosium • Holmium • Erbium • Thullium • Ytterbium • Lutetium • Yttrium. Non-HREE = Lanthanum • Cerium • Praesodymium • Neodymium • Promethium.

NEW YORK (Metal-Pages) 29-Oct-10. Canada and the United States host two of the four largest rare earths projects in world, but their known resources pale next to a China’s Bayan Obo deposit, which is far and away the world’s largest. In fact, based on known reserves of total rare earth oxides, the Chinese deposit is roughly 20 to 30 times larger than each of the next three largest known deposits in the world.  The comparison should be sobering for rare earth consumers outside China and also suggests what non-Chinese rare earth producers could face in terms of comparative production costs and economies of scale.  The North American projects are being rushed toward production, but actual output is still three to five years away at best. China meanwhile produces an estimated 97% of the world’s rare earth elements (REEs) and has been steadily constricting exports.  Avalon Rare Metals’ Nechalacho project in Canada’s Northwest Territories is currently the world’s second-largest rare earths deposit, containing inferred total rare earth oxides of 2.5 million tonnes, according to a recent company investor’s presentation.  Close behind Avalon’s project as the third-largest deposit is the Kvanefeld project in Greenland with estimated reserves of nearly 2.15 million tonnes. The project is being developed by Australia-based Greenland Minerals and Energy.  The fourth-largest project globally is Molycorp’s Mountain Pass project in California, USA, also not far behind with total rare earth oxides estimated at 1.84 million tonnes.  But the Bayan Obo deposit, located in China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region, contains 56.9 million tonnes of rare earth oxides by comparison, according to the Avalon presentation. In addition, the deposit contains iron and niobium ores that have been mined for decades. It should be noted that, while the Bayan Obo and Mountain Pass deposits have lengthy histories of exploration and production (Mountain Pass is a dormant mine that is being redeveloped), Nechalacho and Kvanefeld are still in their early to mid-range exploration phases and can be expected to increase their reserve figures in the future. The Nechalacho project, on the other hand, is far richer than the other three projects in terms of the percentage of heavy rare earth oxides (HREOs) it could produce—22% versus 14% for Kvanefeld and only 2% and 1% respectively for Bayan Obo and Mountain Pass. This means Nechalcho contains a hefty 550,000 tonnes of HREOs according to Avalon’s estimates, compared with Bayan Obo with only about twice that amount (1.14 million tonnes) despite being far larger in overall size. Kvanefeld and Mountain Pass trail with estimated contained HREOs of 301,000 and 18,400 tonnes respectively.  Heavy rare earth oxides (s typically make up only a small percentage of most known rare earth deposits and are thus far more valuable than light rare earth elements. Avalon has estimated that the unusually high HREO content of Nechalcho means the project’s future output would be worth upwards of (US)$22/kg—about twice that of Bayan Obo’s—with output at Mountain Pass being worth around $1.00/lb. (Molycorp has indicated that a significant portion of its anticipated output will be converted and sold as beneficiated/value-added products, however.)  Meanwhile the Mountain Pass project, although the smallest of the four, boasts far richer ore containing 9.2% total rare earth oxides (TREOs). Bayan Obo also ranks high but its ores is less than half as rich on average at 3.9% TREOs. Nechalcho and Kvanefeld lag far behind at 1.4% and 1.0% respectively.  US-based Molycorp plans to bring Mountain Pass into production in 2013 and floated an initial public offering that raised $394 million in early July toward that end. Production initially would be almost 18,000 tonnes/year of finished REEs Canada-based Avalon has hopes to bring Nechalcho hopes to complete a bankable feasibility by mid-2012 and put the project into production by 2015.
